Parvati came from challenging circumstances, but she defied the odds to pursue her education and then build a career for herself from it.
Parvati Kandhar has proved to her community in Singach village, that determination can translate into achievement. A young woman from a six-member family, Parvati is one of the many recipients of Essar Foundation’s Annual Scholarship. The Annual scholarship distribution is an intervention which identifies and supports students who are in genuine need of financial assistance. A joint committee consisting of the Village Sarpanch, school principal, and an Essar Foundation representative conduct this task of identification.
Parvati came from challenging circumstances, but she defied the odds to pursue her education and then build a career for herself from it.
Parvati completed her graduation from DKV College, Jamnagar, in 2013. With the Foundation’s support, she pursued her Masters in Social Work (MSW) from Maharishi Arvind College, Rajkot, in 2015. She was provided with a scholarship of Rupees 20,000 in 2014 which helped her complete her higher education. Parvati was keen on pursuing a career in social work and was still studying when Essar Foundation interviewed her and subsequently helped her connect with the Foundation’s NGO partner, Katha. They recruited her to work with schools as a field coordinator, to execute a highly ambitious education project for Essar Foundation. She underwent training and performed her role diligently. With her substantial grassroots’ level experience and proven skills in this project, she managed to take up a role at BAIF as a Social Mobilizer. Parvati has been involved in projects for improving rural livelihoods as well as women empowerment initiatives.
Parvati’s family, especially her mother, Laxmiben Kandhar, are proud of their daughter who has earned great respect by being the most educated young woman in the village. She has even been invited as a special guest to hoist the Indian flag at a Republic Day function in her village!
As she goes about her day, on her scooter, Parvati inspires several young girls in and around her village to follow their dreams of an education, a career and a life of independence
