World Safety Organization (WSO) recognised Essar Power Gujarat Ltd (EPGL) for its exemplary achievements in developing and implementing effective management system and procedures, along with attaining commendable performance in Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment (OHS&E) for the assessment year 2023. The award was presented during the 5th Annual WSO India OHS&E Professional Development Symposium and the 3rd Edition of the WSO India (State) Level OHS&E Awards 2024, held in Chennai.
World Safety Organization was set up in 1975 as a result of international conference organised by Safety Organization in Mania. It has headquarters in Washington, USA and has presence in more than 22 countries.
In addition to EPGL, several other prominent organisations from the manufacturing and infrastructure sectors, including NTPC, Jindal Steel and Power, Larsen & Toubro Limited, ITD Cementation Limited, Page Industries, SRF Limited, GMRCL, and GSECL Gandhinagar, participated in the symposium and submitted nominations for various awards.
Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Excellence Award 2024
This award was based on outstanding OHS&E measures taken by EPGL to safeguard from:
- Fall of objects/materials from height
- Contact with hot surface
- Exposure to coal/ash dust
- Exposure to high noise
- Oil spillage
- Fugitive dust emission
- Leaching of heavy metals in ash pond
- Contact with acid/alkali
- Toxic gas in confined space/welding gases and fumes
- Electrical hazard
- Fire hazard
The award also recognised EPGL’s innovative approaches on:
- Live firefighting training for workers on quarterly basis
- HSEF Time out – Workers interaction with Technical Team and felicitation of the workers
- Reporting of unsafe condition by workers and employees through HSE portal
Environment Excellence Award 2024:
This Award was based on outstanding measures taken by EPGL for :
- Ensuring ambient air quality and boiler stack emissions are within permissible limit throughout the year
- Operation of plant using Zero Liquid Discharge technology
- Mechanised coal and ash handling system
- Source correction for SO2 emission reduction
- Development and maintenance of good green cover
The award lauded the company’s innovative approaches on:
- Tree plantation on the birthdays of employees
- Utilisation of ETP water for coal & ash handling purposes and STP water for gardening
- Waste to resource (selling of 100% of fly ash and bottom ash in local market, and exporting of fly ash).
