Essar recently participated in the 4th Annual InfraBuild India Conference organised by Indian Infrastructure. Held at The Lalit, Mumbai from February 18th to 19th, the event provided a comprehensive platform to connect with leaders in the port sector. The discussions covered emerging trends, market outlook, construction experiences, key challenges, digital technologies in construction, and upcoming projects and opportunities. Essar Ports Vice President, Mr. Tarkesh Tiwari was part of an insightful panel discussion on Ports and Shipping Infrastructure in India.
The panel also featured other industry leaders like Mr. Devdatta Bose from Tata Consulting Engineers, Mr. Kaushik Nandi from ITD Cementation and Mr. Rakesh Singh Sisodia from JSW Infrastructure.
Mr. Tiwari actively engaged the panel with his views and insights on the subject. He emphasised the critical role of construction in industrial growth and infrastructure development, and discussed the unique challenges in port construction from a developer’s perspective. Unlike other infrastructure projects, port construction costs vary significantly due to factors such as location, marine conditions, and connectivity. Drawing on experience from multiple port projects, he illustrated how costs fluctuate depending on site-specific conditions like dredging requirements and breakwater construction, making it a highly complex and unpredictable sector. He also highlighted how Essar has developed various greenfield port projects at Hazira, Salaya and Vadinar.
The discussion further empahised the complexity of port construction, stressing on the role of advanced design simulations and government support in connectivity, under initiatives like Gati Shakti. Challenges persist in land acquisition, rising costs, and project delays, particularly in port connectivity and land for cargo storage. Mr. Tiwari highlighted the importance of pipeline connectivity for energy cargo like LNG, LPG and ethanol, which faces hurdles in land disputes . Addressing these issues is crucial for enhancing port capacity and supporting India’s cleaner energy transition.
Essar’s active participation in the event highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to shaping the future of India’s port infrastructure. By actively engaging in discussions on challenges, opportunities, and technological advancements, Essar continues to play a crucial role in modernising the sector.
