At the 2nd edition of Economic Times Energyworld Annual Gas Conclave and Awards 2022, held on December 05 & 06, at Taj Palace New Delhi, Mr Pankaj Kalra, CEO – Essar Exploration & Production, joined industry experts in a panel discussion on “Accelerating India’s E&P Potential: What does the Future Hold?”.
The moderator of the panel was Mr Deepak Mahurkar, Leader India Oil & Gas Industry Practice, PwC who commenced the panel discussion on the subject.
Mr Kalra shared the panel with veterans from the industry, C Laxma Reddy, Additional Director General (Exploration), Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), Vinod Tahiliani, CEO, India Gas Solutions and VP – India Growth, Integrated Gas & Power, bp and Elango Pandarinathan, Managing Director, Hindustan Oil Exploration Company Ltd.
Mr Kalra kick-started the conversation by thanking the organisers for conducting such an event and expressing a sense of appreciation for being a part of a panel that included likeminded experts from the industry. He mentioned how Essar is an appropriate case study for CBM, and went on to say that the past year has been transformational with the supply of Gas commencing through the Urja Ganga pipeline. He added that Essar’s stupendous journey not only stands testimony to the outstanding work done by Essar, but also highlights what CBM can do and what it brings forth to decarbonise industries. Mr Kalra also mentioned how Essar aims to take the production from current 1 mn to 3-4 Mn standard cubic meters in the next 2-3 years. By becoming a hub, the company could be an example for entire CBM operations in India and can share its experience to help the sector grow, he said.
Mr Kalra, during the course of discussions of the panel, shared many ideas that could guide India’s E&P efforts, especially through technology and data centers. He also highlighted how the policy environment is fast moving away from a production sharing to a revenue sharing contract, thereby enabling favourable regulatory frameworks for the industry. He also emphasised the need to transition to a gas-based economy, and how CBM will play a critical role moving away from fossil fuels, and in promoting low-carbon sustainable businesses.
