Essar has been conducting skill development programmes for communities at the village level through its flagship training hubs called Essar Lok Vikas Kendras (ELVK). These centres have been imparting training to women and youth in various trades such as dress and garment design, salon services, baked goods, handicrafts, etc. The women have not only received skill training, but have received additional guidance and support towards starting their own enterprise. Almost 100 women have completed their courses on garment manufacturing and beauty services, several of whom have either begun or are on their way to starting their own businesses.
A convocation ceremony was recently organised to mark the certification of these women in garment manufacturing and beauty therapy. Their newly developed skills were showcased through a special ramp walk and contest. The trainees of the garment manufacturing trade walked the ramp in their own ensemble, while their hair and makeup was done by the trainees of beautician trade. To select the winners of the contest, governing members of the Essar Ladies Club were made jury. The top three dress designers and top makeup artists were selected, and the top 5 were awarded certificates and prizes.
Women from ELVKs also presented a folk dance and a play on ‘Save the Girl Child’. The event was attended by more than 250 women from eight villages, which also included those from three villages (namely Damka, Vanswa and Rajgari) where ELVKs will be set up in future. Essar Foundation manages Essar Lok Vikas Kendras in five villages around Hazira area in Gujarat. The trainees are currently being provided handholding support towards their new ventures. The Foundation wishes these enterprising women great success in their endeavors!
