Breastfeeding has an important role to play in ensuring the growth, development and survival of children around the world, and is the foundation of lifelong good health for babies and mothers. Each year the world observes World Breastfeeding Week to promote breastfeeding. This year’s theme for the week is ‘Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life’.
Essar Foundation actively works with women round the year to promote breastfeeding. Kicking off the Breastfeeding Week celebration this year, 70 lactating and expecting mothers participated in a two-day event in Dabuna & Purunadihi villages of Keonjhar (Odisha).
Meenakshi Naik- Auxillary Nurse & Midwife, Pramila Pradhan- ASHA Health Worker, Dabuna, Kanaklata Pradhan, AWW-Dabuna, Minarani Naik- Health Attendant, Phoolmani Tanty, ASHA- Purunadihi, Kuni Baidya- AWW- Purunadihi facilitated the event with interactive sessions on importance of breastfeeding, benefits of breast milk, myths surrounding colostrum (first milk of a lactating mother) and exclusive breastfeeding from 0-6 months.
Breast milk contains antibodies that help the baby fight off viruses and bacteria. Breastfeeding lowers the baby’s risk of having asthma or allergies. Besides, babies who are breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months, have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses, and bouts of diarrhea. The event concluded with women pledging to breastfeed in the best interest of their child.
